For some of you that don’t know me, my name is David King, and I consider myself the voice of the forgotten food addict.
I’m talking about the type of folks who take a single bite of cookie dough and suddenly finding themselves raiding the refrigerator for every snack they can get their hands on. Or if you start eating one piece of pizza, and the next thing you know, the entire thing is gone, and you don’t know what happened.
It’s a pain in the ass, right? Sadly, these food cravings are adding a ton of unwanted pounds, and you don’t know what to do. You feel like you’ve tried everything.
So that’s who I am. I’m a voice for you. I have a plan for you. I have a group for you, and this is where my career has taken me. I’ve done this for about 13 years. I am a binge eater, food addict, carboholic, and sugar demon sufferer.
One day I woke up and said, “You know what, holy shit, this is me, this is what I do. This is how I live my life.“
But I hacked these addictions. I use challenges, groups, support, and coaching to beat my addictions. I hacked this thing so that I can stay at a new goal weight range. So quit trying to pretend. Moderation to people like us is death. We’ve tried it, and it doesn’t work. So if that’s you, I’m here for you.
The question that begs to be asked is: “what if I gain the weight back?” Sadly, 90% of people gain the weight back that they worked so hard to lose in the first place. They try to lose it, but they usually gain it all back due to weak willpower.
So, what can you do? What do we do? What do I do to ensure that the people who come to me, don’t fall into this trap? Well, there are a few things we do, and one of them is something we call the Fat Shocker. It’s all about moderation in the sense that you’re trying to cut back a little bit here and there.
Using Moderation To Lose Weight
Moderation is all about taking things easy. All too often, however, we slip up. We eat something that we shouldn’t. One cookie turns into two and suddenly you’ve downed several gallons of Cookies and Cream ice cream in a couple of days.
That’s not because you suck or because you’re a bad person. My guess is there are other areas of your life where you’re completely successful. Whether that be in your professional career, parenting, relationships, education, etc. You’ve probably knocked it out of the ballpark in a ton of different areas. That proves that you have willpower.
Typically I say this to people when I talk to them on the phone for the first time:
“Hey look, tell me the highlights from the time you were in high school, I want you to run up on through your 20’s, and 30’s, and into your 40’s. What did you participate in? What did you do athletically? Did you run track in school? Did you play ball? Did you not? Did you start jogging in your 20’s? Did you go to the gym? Do you hate the gym? What food programs have you tried? Give me the highlights all the way through so I can understand.“
I listen to their story and try to get a beat on whether or not I can help that person. If I hear it in their voice and I identify a familiar pattern, then I know I can help them. Quite frankly, I’m the last dude on the block that people want to see. They come to see me begrudgingly.
They come with the attitude of “Oh, snap. I’m gonna have to do some work. He’s gonna make me look inside my head. I’ve gotta admit things to myself that I’ve been hiding from. Damn.“
That assessment is actually true, but I’m not a harsh guy. I don’t yell. I talk loud because I like enthusiasm and because I feel like it gets the message across. But you won’t see me doing that Jillian Michael’s stuff. Plus, I’m not a big exercise coach. Yes, I personally train and I consider myself good at it, but I acknowledge the fact that there are tons of people out there that are better.
This is what I do. So I talk to them on the phone, I get their story, I hear them, and I say, “Okay, give me a couple of your stats. Give me a couple of your goals. Where you’re at and where you want to go.” And I’ll give them a little bit of feedback.
What Do You Do If You Gain The Weight Back?
Guess what? Even if you didn’t do all of the stuff I asked you to do, even if that stuff failed you, or you just couldn’t find it in your heart to do the mindset work in the morning, you didn’t access the group, and you slipped into a black hole. You’ve still gained a skill set. You have the group, the talent, and most importantly the knowledge.
You will never fucking forget the Fat Shocker. I can promise you that much. Just know that the work is never over. So what if you gain it back? Don’t let that scare you away. Go get what you want and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
